We at GadgetVenue are looking for a decent backup solution. Right now we have backups stored by our webhost for 7 days as well as an off site backup that I copy each day manually to my computer. I am not sure this is ideal though and want something that’s automated and safer and am looking for ideas from you, the readers.
Although I trust my web host I need something online that I can either FTP to or some how automatically transmit files to and that service preferably will be UK or US based. For storage amounts we are looking at somewhere in the region of 20GB+ so several days can be stored at the external location. I want the service to just run it’s self and be completely hands off after setup.
We have found in the UK Online Backup Technology who fit the storage requirements but as of yet I don’t have a quote as prices are not displayed on their site.
US based, I came across IDrive who offer plenty of space for a fee. But, from what I read there it seems like it’s only available for backups on Windows and Mac based products. I am unable to find a way to FTP files from the server to online backup unless I somehow map a drive.
Others seem to offer what the above 2 do but I’m not convinced just yet enough to hand some cash out. Has anybody used any backup services or do you have any horror stories of backups going wrong and what to avoid?
Please post suggestions and ideas below.

We offer secure offsite backup hosted in the us. Our plans start as low as $2 per GB per month.

You could always do it without FTP. I saw that the online storage company http://www.myotherdrive.com offers http access to send your files and they can backup network attached storage or usb drives as well as your main computer. I think they also allow file sharing.
Golden Technologies offers an offsite backup solution called Golden DataGuard, that backs up to a datacenter in Northwest Indiana. It utilizes client side software that is java based, so it is platform independent. Our plans are maximum $3/GB for a managed solution (we monitor and maintain your backups), or less for non-managed. If you need a custom scripted rsync and/or ftp solution our network engineers can assist with that also. Depending on your exact needs we can design a solution that fits. Email or call anytime to discuss. I’ll gladly extend a free trial to you… no commitment, down payments, credit cards or anything at all required to try it out. Have a nice night.
If you have been unable to locate a offsite data storage company, please review our company and we can assist you with your needs met. We are below $2.00 per gig and have other options for review to assist in making your data storage worth your time and ours. Remote Data Storage can help your business by automatically backing up and storing, offsite, your critical data, by building custom storage systems for your data and even helping with your networking needs. Let RDS show you how to plan these steps and ensure your business continuation in the event of a major disaster or even a server meltdown. Remote Data Storage can backup your critical data, image your system and programs and have your business data restored faster than you can purchase that new computer.
We basically wanted to make this plain and simple. Your backup is only as good as what you actually are successfully backing up. That is where the Backup Consolation service comes in handy. Our techs can help you find the data that is really important to you. They can help you identify what and what should not be backed up, and can work with you to maximize the most space on your offsite account.
Hello
Your crie de coeur was ‘uttered’ months ago and you have probably found your offsite online backup solution. If not, you may wish to consider ours, with unlimited free tech support based in the UK, where the host servers also are.
Because this message is on the web I have given you a Yahoo address. On our website you will find a more convenient one. Your 20 GB don’t cost very much, the exact price depending on the number of computers/servers to be backed up.
Our service uses internationally proven technology which is easy to set up and easy to use.
‘Set up and forget.’
FWIW I have been using a similar service for over 10 years and I wouldn’t do anything else.
Do contact us, even if it is only to tell us you are sorted (if so, how/with whom?)
Best regards.
