OCZ are launching a new SSD drive. The Summit Series is their latest attempt at improving on this fascinating technology. PC Perspective managed to get their hands on an early development model for testing.
The OCZ Summit Series SSD improves on the previous version named the Apex series. The Apex series used a “RAID in a drive” system so that a pair of controllers could be used. This made the Apex Series SSD’s quicker but not as quick as their potential. This is why the Summit series was created… to improve on what was good. The Summit series SSD is currently in a 2.5″ form factor and has a standard SATA connector.
A unique difference on the Summit Series SSD is a 64MB dedicated on-board cache which boosts speeds of the drive. The 64MB of cache on the Summit SSD helps to sort out memory and what is being written and read from the drive. SSD’s tend to slow down a bit here to keep them selves organised. With the cache in place it provides a temporary store to let things still happen while the drive thinks about what is to do next.
