The Nikon Pro Battery Grip is built for the Nikon D200. The Nikon Pro version is capable of taking both AA batteries and Li-Ion making it easy to access batteries when in need.
Included on the grip is a vertical shutter release button.
As well as the vertical shutter release button there are a number of other controls built in to the grip that include a main dial, sub-main dial and AE Lock/FE Lock.

I don’t know who told you that “other” battery grips don’t take AA batteries but they were wrong. Pretty much any grip has an option for AA batteries. Nikon’s own MB-D200 has that option.
