Normally when you see a rugged IP54 rated device you look and think… I am sure it does it’s job, but at the same time it’s just ugly. Motorola seem to be changing this by creating 2 new rugged mobile phones named the MC5590 and the MC5574.
The MC5574 is the basic model that has Wi-Fi, GPS and an LED backlit display. This model (pictured on the left) has a regular 0 – 9 keypad which appears to work with predictive entry as an enter key, backspace and tab key can be found to the left and right. The camera for this phone is 2 megapixels. Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR is built in. Memory can be expanded on the phone by the use of a MicroSD card. The phone works on GSM networks and data can be transferred at GPRS and EDGE although no 3G is available unfortunately. The chosen operating system on this phone is Windows Mobile 6.1.
The MC5590 is a slight step up as it has WWAN support and a QWERTY keyboard much like a blackberry does. With this model having slightly better connectivity it allows for users to utilise VoIP to make calls.
Both phones are rugged meaning they can be dropped from a height of 1.2M to concrete without breaking. Each has a 3.5″ screen at 320 x 240 pixels.
Now available at Amazon. Full specs and details can be found over on Motorola’s website.
