Mobile Web 2.0 – WidSets

by Matthew on October 3, 2006

Nokia have announced that they are now working with WidSets which is the power behind mobile Web 2.0. This service is available today on many popular handsets listed below. WidSets allows mobile devices to connect to web 2.0 sites and enjoy features such as RSS feeds and user generated content. To sign up for the service you can visit the WidSets site listed below and configure what you want freely, choosing from RSS feeds, blog posts, photo uploading which will all be multicasted to your new generation Java(TM) enabled mobile phone. The service is optimised for minimum data consumption which will help keep those GPRS bills to a minimum, but at the same time, it will deliver the content you want direct to your pocket.

I decided to test this out with it being free. I have a Nokia N70 phone on the Three network.

Registration was simple. I just went to the the WidSets site and clicked the registration button. It prompts for a few basic things such as a username, password. The next page asks for your country. I entered the UK and then completed the +44 with the rest of my mobile number (dropping the 0 from the front). Seconds later a text message arrived.

Ok, I already hit a downer! I am on the 3 network and they charge for regular web access. Not to worry. I quickly signed up for the PAYG (Pay as You Go) Three service and woo hoo… I am now at the WidSets page and downloading the WidSets application to my phone. The app is only a few K in size, so it wont hurt the PAYG account which is charged at £2/Meg.

Ok, the software is now installed which took around 30 seconds from receiving the text (after sorting out my net access) to downliading and fully being installed.

The application is now launched and it asks for my access point details which was just 3 (not 3 MMS) and now I am connected it’s time to visit the website again on my PC.

Back on my PC I click continue and it now shows that my phone is connected to WidSets and shows that the data transfer is currently at zero. The image below isnt very good quality, but you can see the basic interface that you have.

With this interface you can search for different sites compatible and drag them around the blue screen in the middle of the page. Once you drag your content on to the screen you can then click syncronise and it transferres all data to your mobile phone.

The only main problems I ran in to were internet access on my mobile. I just had 3’s service as standard. This was a simple fix. Also I had to switch the connection from sockets to HTTP on the mobile phone version of the software. With sockets it just did not want to work.

I now have immediate access to all the news stories and blogs I want. The service seems like a great idea and could fall somewhere near to AvantGo for the Pocket PC where you choose your online content and syncronise. Once configured you only need to connect to get the latest data.
