Layer 3.5 for Android Now Available

A new version of Layar has been launched for Android OS smartphones. The new version is Layar 3.5 that has been launched now includes real time location based search. By opening the application you can quickly discover what's in the area around you. Search queries now don't need to be used every time.

Previously, Layar was viewed as a novelty application which was loaded up, a search done and a "wow that's great" comment. With the new version, Layar say that 3.5 is more of a utility that can be used day to day when out and about searching for nearby things of interest.

The new application when opened, presents the user with a list of nearby interesting content that is sorted by time, location, proximity, popularity and preferences. This list doesn't require you stand with your phone at arms length holding it in front of you. What you can do is search for what you need, click it and then hold the phone up to view where it is through the camera where the details are then augmented on to the screen.

Over 700 layers are published on the Layar Platform with over 2500 in development. These layers are developed by the global community of 3500 Layar publishers and producers, and by leading brands and agencies. Layar is located in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The company is VC funded and has 32 employees.

It isn't known yet when an iPhone app update is being made available although we suspect it will follow this month, perhaps next month. Full details can be found over at Layar.
