Is Sony releasing a Touch Screen PSP?
July 1, 2008
A patent was recently given to Sony which states “hand-held [sic] device with touchscreen and digital tactile pixels”. The patent isn’t too clear on what this type of screen will be used for, but guesses would lead you to believe either a new Sony PSP 2.0 or a PSP phone maybe. A good number of potential uses are listed in the patent which include gaming devices, phones, portable media players, web browsing device and navigation. The “digital tactile pixels” have me interested. From what others have mentioned it seems like the tactile feedback could be in the form of vibrations on the screen to provide that kind of response. We have seen phones give feedback when touching the screen, but that has been the whole phone vibrating. Maybe the digital tactile pixels will vibrate the part of the screen you touch only which would be interesting.
While I always liked the Sony PSP, I find my self wanting to use a Nintendo DS more due to the touchscreen and dual screen setup. Could Sony win me back over with a PSP 2.0? Maybe!
