iPod Touch gets Navigation with G-Fi and Navmii

An application called Navmii brings satellite navigation to the Apple [AAPL] iPod Touch and iPhone 2G. The navigation software is called Navmii and provides turn-by-turn navigation to each of the said devices. To get GPS co-ordinates a new system called G-Fi is used. G-Fi is a device that has a GPS receiver inside and also works as a mini router allowing the iPod Touch or iPhone 2G to connect to it wirelessly and receive the GPS co-ordinates to allow the mapping software to function. Although not a new product, I still thought it was worth a mention here.

The G-Fi unit runs on battery and is good to power the GPS and wireless connection for about 5 hours of usage. The broadcast range is about 100 feet.

GeoLife have created the Navmii software that provides the turn-by-turn routing. PosiMotion are the company who make the G-Fi device that works along side it.

The software costs £29.99 for the UK maps and $39.99 for the US maps while the GPS/Wireless G-Fi hardware costs $99.

Full details of the system can be found at G-Fi.
