O2 will be allowing you to connect to the internet on your laptop via your iPhone by using it as a modem. iPhone tethering will be made available on the 17th June when the new iPhone OS 3.0 is launched. However, there will be a charge for the service which can see you paying up to £29.36 a month for 10GB of data.
The iPhone tethering plans are for pay monthly customers and are an additional subscription that you need to purchase. The prices start at £14.68 for 3GB of data with an overage charge of 19.6p per MB (hefty!!!). The next plan gets 10GB as mentioned above which costs £29.36 and the same overage prices are applied as the cheaper plan.
Business customers can sign up to data tethering contracts which get you the data a little cheaper. 3GB on a 24 month contract will set you back £9.99 ex VAT with 9GB costing £20 a month. If you go for a month to month 30 day contract then prices slightly increase to £12.77 for the 3GB plan and £23.83 for the 9GB plan. Just make sure if you are a business customer you don’t forget to add the 15% current VAT charge on top.
5000 wi-fi hotspots will be available for you to access that are based all over the UK.
Although the prices are fairly reasonable I am surprised that they don’t bundle them in to the iPhone plans for a slightly lower cost of say £5 per month for 3GB. No doubt prices will drop over the coming years as mobile broadband becomes more popular.
