The HTC Dream is about to be launched in Australia. Known as the G1 in the UK, this Android based phone is another competitor to the iPhone 3G. The HTC Dream will be made available on all networks who want it in Australia although for now it is only being launched on to the Optus network. This is purely due to other carries needing to configure the software to their network.
The HTC Dream has what the iPhone does not… a physical keyboard. It is capable of being stowed away under the device just like other HTC mobile phones. The keyboard is a 5-row QWERTY too making it fairly easy to type and send emails or text messages on. With it running Android it allows some custom stuff to be done too. You will need a good programming knowledge to do this… but as plenty of people do there will be no doubt that a ton of apps will be made available for it.
The Dream has a 3.2-inch TFT-LCD flat touch-sensitive screen with HVGA (320 X 480 pixel) resolution. The homescreen of the phone is really a 3 screen affair – there’s a central panel, and left and right, and with the flick of a finger you can navigate the 3 sections, so lots of customisation is available to you right there. The camera is 3.2 megapixels with auto focus, there’s instant messaging support for Google Talk, a full HTML web browser, Wi-Fi, and for storage there is a microSD (SD 2.0 compatible) expansion slot accommodating up to 8GB.
The HTC Dream will be launched in Australia on the 16th Feb 2009.
