We wrote about the 1474 megapixel photo created of President Obama’s Inauguration. The device used to create this picture was a GigaPan Imager.
We now learn that a GigaPan Epic Imager is being made available from commercial sale. It is compatible with a variety (if not all) point and shoot cameras. The GigaPan Epic Imager can be classed as an accessory that you simple attach your camera too. Once attached and set up, a robotic type arm moves the camera around automatically taking pictures of each segment. Once complete, an online service at Gigapan allows you to upload all of your images which are then converted in to a very large photo that users can scroll around.
The inaugural photo that measured 1474 megapixels was created by this device that took a total of 220 photos. This similar device will now be available for you to but and will cost $379 which is not bad at all in my opinion.
A couple of versions are being made with the GigaPan Epic costing the $379 while the Epic 100 will cost $449. The 100 (more expensive model) will be able to cope with larger cameras but seems to have all the same features.
