motorola droid 300x238 Droid Tethering Coming Early 2010When getting a new phone with high speed internet available on it, a common want is to be able to use the phone as a modem for your laptop so you can access the internet on a larger screen while on the move. Often this ability, referred to as tethering, is blocked, but recently we are seeing more phones and carriers open up to allowing phones to be used for this, for a fee of course. We now hear that the Motorola Droid will have tethering ability on the Verizon network starting early next year.

Verizon have mentioned that their Broadband Access Connect plan will be made available for Droid early next year. This mobile plan is designed to allow you to use your phone for tethering.

Pricing for the tethering service is expectetd to add around $15/month to your service plan and you are restricted to 5GB of usage per month which should be ample in most cases although just keep an eye on the records because if you go over then the charges are quite high on the Verizon network. There is always the alternative available of rooting your Droid (when that becomes available) and then installing a wireless tether (when that is compatible with Android 2.0) which lets you bypass all this, but if you want to stay on the good side of Verizon it’ll cost you more than likely the $15/month for the service.
