Dell have released a new model laptop in their studio range. The Dell Studio 14z (z series) is a laptop that comes with FailSafe Theft Protection and a new PowerShare USB system which allows your USB devices to be charged even with the laptop is shut down.
The Studio 14z is similar to a netbook in that no optical drives are included. I personally never use optical drives, or VERY rarely so this is no biggie for me. However, if you need an optical drive then you’ll either need to go for an external USB drive or pick another laptop.
The FailSafe Theft Protection system is a system which allows you to track the location of your studio 14z. However, the thief does need to go online with the laptop for you to be able to trace it which is quite likely if you have wi-fi enabled when they switch it on for the first time.
The Dell Studio 14z weighs just 4.3 pounds and has an Intel Core 2 Duo processor inside. 3GB of DDR3 RAM is included as well as a powerful NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics card. A nice sized 250GB HDD is included as well as an 8 in 1 card reader. The Hi-Def 14 inch screen is backlit by LED making it a little more economical. WiFi (g on the basic model, n on the upper models) and bluetooth are included for connectivity and the laptop has a 1.3 megapixel camera built in. Another feature is a HDMI port that allows you to hook it up to a HD screen.
The battery will last 6.5 hours according to Dell on a single charge which is fairly decent. It appears to be a very feature packed and powerful laptop and not at a bad price too. Prices start at $649 and up depending on what you include with it.
