Canon EOS 5D Mark II gets a Firmware update to 2.0.3

by Matthew Newill on March 16, 2010

Earlier this month we announced that Canon were about to launch firmware version 2.0.3 for the Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera.

The firmware is now live and available for download. What the new firmware does is bring a number of changes to the way videos are recorded allowing 1920x1080 (full HD 1080p) to be captured at 29.97 frames per second in NTSC format along with 1920 x 1080 at 23.976 frames per second and a change to the 640 x 480 resolution video that is captured now at 29.97 frames per second.

For those using PAL the resolutions and framerates are as follows...

PAL:
* 1920—1080 : 25 fps (added - actual 25.0 fps)
* 1920—1080 : 24 fps (added - actual 23.976 fps)
* 640—480 : 25 fps (added - actual 25.0 fps)

As well as adding new framerates and HD video options to the camera a manual adjustment of sound can be be done in 64 levels. Previously audio was adjusted automatically.

A histogram as also been added showing either brightness or RGB while recording movies in manual exposure allowing you to adjust as needed.

Other various fixes have also been made where manual cleaning caused the camera to not be able to detect the lens.

Full instructions on how to install the new firmware can be found over on the Canon site.
