InventorSpot have an interesting article up today that mentions a new camless engine that could potentially run with more power, but use less fuel. The normal internal combustion engine runs at about 25%-30% in efficiency at the flywheel. Once that power reaches the wheels an estimated 10% more is lost too.
A company in Sweden believe that by removing the camshaft the engine will free up some wasted energy making it more efficient and more powerful.
Cargine’s new design uses a pneumatic valve actuation system to regulate the opening and closing of your engines valvetrain. Pressures range from 44-232PSI, depending on such things as lift and duration and the average power consumption is noticeably less than that of a traditional DOHC Inline-4 engine. It also reduces the amount of space needed by half and weights about 30% less than the standard configuration.
Rather then me go too much over what InventorSpot have already said, I suggest taking a read of their article. It’s quite an interesting idea.
