Battery that Charges in Seconds

lithium ion battery Battery that Charges in SecondsThe MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) have created a new technology that might make it possible for batteries to be charged in seconds rather then hours. The new batteries will be smaller, lighter and be built for cell phones, laptops and other mobile gadgets.

The system works by what it’s creators call a “beltway” which allows rapid transit of electrical energy. The same technology could be adapted to work with a car also although all this depends on what the electricity grid will allow to be pushed out any any given moment.

While lithium batteries have high energy densities, they charge and discharge relatively slowly, MIT said. However, MIT about five years ago predicted that the material used in the batteries, lithium iron phosphate, should actually carry charges must faster.

The key, MIT said, was the way lithium ions in the material move through tunnels that can be accessed from the surface of the material. Those ions move quickly if near a tunnel, while others not near tunnels were blocked.

To get around this problem a new surface structure has been created which allows the lithium ions to move around the surface and enter a tunnel when needed. This benefits the system in 2 ways. First off, the battery can be charged quicker (ie, 10 – 20 seconds) and the size of the battery is also made smaller.

If tests are successful we could see this new battery being put in place in the next few years.

Well thats a good thing to happen.
Now get your batteries charged quickly.

Can’t wait for better batteries!!!! It’s the one thing holding a lot of devices back! There are loads of devices out there which are great but just have a poor battery life.

If the national grid complain about big surges perhaps the designers create charged which can slow charge and store enough energy. Then when we need our phone charging we can plug in and quickly suck our stored energy from our charger! This will save the strain on the power grids.

Can’t wait for potential better batteries!

This would be great if true – the next big step was supposed to be lithium titanate for fast recharging – a full recharge in six minutes.
