A patent filed by Apple [AAPL] has revealed that the company might be working on a headset with iPod functionality built in. The patent shows a set of earphones with the lower one in the drawing housing an iPod shuffle type device. A small screen can be found on the side of the earphones and the opposite channel either goes around your head with a band, or a loose wire as shown in the diagram.
Features included in the patent show it has speakers, voice command and processor, transceiver, button, antenna, battery, memory, display, media player, connector and microphone. All of these lead towards it being some kind of bluetooth enabled media device to carry music around.
The microphone is for the voice command feature although it seems that you can also hook it up over bluetooth to a device like your iPhone and make handsfree calls, although if you are carrying around your iPhone then is there really a need for an iPod headset as you’d be essentially carrying around 2 iPods with you.
It perhaps could be a next gen iPod with an overlap when used with the iPhone… I am sure we’ll here more details soon if Apple are taking this one seriously.

While this seems to be really cool I have to wonder how many people would actually be interested in it. I don’t even use the ipod feature of my iphone much.
