9 to 5 Mac just received a tip which indicates that the iPhone and iPod touch are to get an in-house developed radio application. The application is said to run the same functionality as the FM radio app found in new iPod Nanos.
Apple are still working on the application and right now we hear that it is just being held up by problems with integrating it in to the Mobile iTunes application. Basically, if you like a song you hear on the radio you can then go ahead and purchase it from the iTunes store. The system relies on radio stations using tagging which can pass the details of the current song to the iPhone so that iTunes can easily integrate with it.
9 to 5 Mac also indicate that the app will likely have a Live Pause function just like the new Nanos have now that will allow a song to be paused and played back after a phone call has ended for example.
The iPhone already has an FM transmitter/receiver built in, but as of now only the Nike+ system makes use of it.
There are a few other features that still are unused on the iPhone which includes wireless 802.11n. Hopefully a future upgrade will unleash the full potential of the iPhones connectivity.
