Garmin have created a new system named SVT (Synthetic Vision Technology). What SVT does is presents a 3D depiction of the terrain as well as displays obstacles and traffic on to the Garmin G1000 avionics suite. The G1000 is Garmin’s primary glass flight display and by integrating 3D terrains, makes it much safer to fly when there is very poor visibility.
The 3D render displays on the glass what the pilot would see if there was full visibility. Awareness of the surrounding terrain and traffic is essential for a pilot.
The new vision technology will be made available to the G900X equipped aircraft in just a few months time and then the G1000 King Air C90 retrofit in 2009.
Garmin’s SVT brings an unprecedented level of integration and awareness to pilots of G1000-equipped aircraft,” said Gary Kelley, Garmin’s vice president of marketing. “SVT transforms the cockpit by accurately displaying synthetic terrain, flight hazards, flight path marker and highway-in-the-sky on the PFD so that the pilot maintains excellent airborne situational awareness even when flying in conditions of reduced visibility or darkness. This results in reduced pilot workload and safer flying.
