10 Million to be spent at Google on Electric Cars

Google recently installed a 1.6 megawatt solar roof on to its main building. This will provide about 1/3 of the companies electricity usage on the campus. Along with this earth saving move, Google are to spend around $10 Million on grants relating to plug in cars. Mixing this with the new solar roof allows Google to create a garage where employees can park the company cars and charge them up by solar while at work for the day and then be able to use them for running errands.

The cars are to be converted from hybrid cars and will be made pluginable (made up word??). The cars so far converted have been four Toyota Prius and two Ford Escapes. 100 of these cars will be made available for employees to run errands with. The cars can run for about 30 minutes on electricity before switching to regular gas engine. It converts to about 73.6 MPG which is not bad at all. Sensors are built in to the cars to report back performance and so that Google can track how they are doing.

It does sound like an excellent idea and I am sure Google will do it well.
